I am a man and I read. And I read a lot. I always read two books at the same time and, recently, also a comic . At the time of writing, October 10, I'm reading my 67th and 68th books of the year (I exclude comics in the calculation, unless they're actual comic books). I can define myself as a strong reader, even if I don't know where the border is with a weak one, but they say that someone who reads at least one book a month is strong. But why do statistics say that for years women have read much more than men? I could insert some stereotypes: the man spends his free time watching football on TV or lounging on social media or increasing the alcohol content in his blood. Maybe as a man I'm sui generis , because I can't stand football, I'm almost absent on social media and I drink a beer every now and then. I get up early in the morning to read and read for a couple of hours in the evening before dinner.
What do most men do instead of reading? Chronological statistics in favor of women Doing a brief search online, in the decade 2007/2017 the statistics are clear and also monotonous: women read more than men . Go figure out why. 2007: “ Why do women Special Data read more than men? ”, «Literature» 2011: “ There are more female readers than male readers. Imagine why ”, «The 27th Hour» 2015: “ Women read more than men. In Italy reading is female ", «Let's liberate» 2016: " Women read much more than men ", «Si24» 2017: " Women are reading more and more ", «Il Sole 24 Ore» In 2015, Istat published a detailed report on the "reading" situation in Italy. Since 2008, the percentage of female readers has always exceeded that of male readers by at least 11 units. It must be said that the survey predicted who had read at least one book in the previous 12 months. Reading a book a year, for me, is like not reading at all. Women are more familiar with books From 6 to 8 October I participated in a training course organized by NN Editore , “I read about work”, held at Villa Mirra, in the quiet Cavriana (MN).
Booksellers, publishers, regular readers participated, those who - for work or passion - loved being immersed in books and stories. Well, out of 45 people, we men were present in just seven units . Yep, 38 women against 7 men . Who won? I asked myself the reason for this disparity and the answer (almost) came from reading the statistics on reading in Italy. If women read more than men, it is obvious that more women than men participate in a path like "I read about work". If a man doesn't like reading for pleasure, imagine how he can combine reading with work: he will run away. What about reading groups? Rose! At the “I read about work” event, a girl who organizes reading groups told me that there are always women among the participants. I read the same thing online and it's the same in the US too. I asked a friend of mine who attends reading groups on Goodreads and she told me the same thing: in the group she hosts there are only women and in the others women prevail. In short, for us men a reassuring picture does not emerge: we are the goats of the human species. Other than Homo sapiens , here we are relegated to Homo caprinus .
